Roof Rake Board

Turn the saw on and pull it down to cut the angle. Miter the ends of your fascia board to 45 degree angles so they fit together. Rake boards are installed on the gable ends of brick houses to cover the exposed top edge of the brick. Essentially the spine of a conventional stick framed roof the ridge board is sandwiched between the meeting ends of the roof rafters.

The last pieces to go in were nailing blocks above the ledger for the back of the return and at the bottom edge of the soffit for attaching the rake 20. For example a large 1 4 or 1 6 rake board works when there isn t an eave extending out to an overhang on the gable end. Put on your safety glasses and position the fascia board so the corner on one end lines up with the saw blade. The sloped edge of a roof over a wall is the rake.

You measure this as a rise and run equation such as 6 12 where the rake angle rises six units in 12 units of run. For example six inches up for every 12 inches across. Rake boards follow or parallel your roof pitch. The rake board covers the top edge of the siding where it meets the roof or soffit if there is an overhang on the gable end and prevents rain from running behind it.

Set the angle of a miter saw to 45 degrees so you can make clean cuts through the board. Before the roof sheathing goes on the open framing provides easy access for attaching the return blocking and the nailers for the rake soffit. Rakes are always miter joined at the ridge of your roof.
