Root cellars need to be several feet underground to maintain a consistent temperature and humidity.

We just built a root cellar into the hill bordering our carport concrete wall. Build the form for the roof. They built this structure out of cordwood and created a green roof too. Without the dirt on top of them they won t function well.

This created an extremely strong structure. Asseble the form on the roof. This winter the coldest in the root cellar has been 2 celsius 28 4 f when it was our coldest outside at 17 celsius 1 4 f. Ideally the door should face north to keep out the sun s.

The green roof root cellar. The floor is dirt crush. It is backed into the earth which helps to keep your vegetables nice and cool all year long. All walls are concrete with 2 feet of dirt on the concrete roof.

This root cellar is very unique and beautiful to look at. Satisfied with the form i reassembled it on the root cellar walls. The cellar described in the seven steps is a traditional earth root cellar. I built the form in the shop then dismantled it.

The arches are 1 2 inch plywood pressed into dadoed grooves in the 2 4 s. Only two sides are just concrete. While you can attempt to design the roof yourself it would be best to discuss roof form capacity and formation with a trained engineer. Cement blocks are ideal for root cellar walls but you can get creative with old tires or some other supportive material.
